LeapFrog Solutions seeks an experienced, highly organized Proposal Development Manager with excellent leadership, management, interpersonal and problem solving skills. This is a multi-faceted position requiring hands-on new business support, initiative, adaptability and excellent follow through.

The Proposal Development Manager will be responsible for managing all aspects of the company’s proposal-related activities for the full procurement lifecycle. Contrary to its name, marketing and communications company LeapFrog Solutions didn’t immediately leap into the government market.

That happened in 2002, when Lisa Martin’s company won three small consulting contracts from the Federal Railroad Administration, Voice of America and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Others modest government awards followed from the Secret Service, National Credit Union Administration and Office of the Currency.

Martin said she quickly realized that, like commercial entities, many federal agencies had websites that were not in sync with their mission statements. Also, activities such as direct mail, trade show appearances and ad campaigns also were disjointed because each operation was the responsibility of a different domain.

So for the government market, she said, “Our very ambitious goal was ‘make the message matter.’ Whether it was online, offline, we wanted to make the message consistent.”

LeapFrog’s big leap into the government arena began in 2008, when the Federal Emergency Management Agency set aside its marketing and communications contracting as a small-business award.

HopToIt: Don't Make Your PowerPoint Pointless

PowerPoint presentations are so ubiquitous in today's business world that I have difficulty remembering the last time I attended a live or online event where the speaker (or speakers) did not click through a deck of computerized slides overflowing with information, charts, graphs, diagrams, photos or illustrations.

The original PowerPoint was developed for Macintosh computers and called "Presenter." It was renamed PowerPoint in 1987 and its developers sold it for $14 million to Microsoft, which launched it three years later. Businesses worldwide quickly embraced it and used it to create computerized presentations that replaced clear plastic "foils" that were shown on overhead projectors.

Some speakers can't let go of their PowerPoints. A former colleague once announced his candidacy for Congress via PowerPoint. His friends joked that he probably would propose by PowerPoint.

I'm sure you have suffered through 60-slide presentations delivered in machine-gun style by speakers who attempt to cram an encyclopedia of information into their allotted 15 minutes, or worse, the hour-long presentation, usually delivered right after lunch in a darkened hotel conference room.

Hop To It: Is It Time to Rebrand?

Before we talk about rebranding, let's talk about what the word "brand" means. A brand is the essence or promise that a product, service or organization delivers to or is experienced by a buyer. Your brand confirms your credibility and connects your target audience emotionally. A strong brand will motivate and create loyal users. It is the sum total of their experiences and perceptions. Although your organization's name, logo and theme help to support the brand, they are not the only elements. Indeed, successful brands — such as Apple, McDonald's and Coca-Cola, to name a few — are represented by every aspect of their communications, from advertising to websites to press releases to promotions.

So what does "rebranding" mean? An organization goes through changes and evolves over time. As a result, sometimes the current brand does not align with whom and what the organization is, nor does the brand represent where the organization is heading. And sometimes an organization's relationship with its customers changes.

Another way to define rebranding is to think of your brand as the foundation of your organization. If your foundation has developed a few cracks, it may be time to lay a new one.

Keep in mind that rebranding is more than just enhancing your company logo. Rebranding means taking a hard look at your current positioning, messaging and values. Sometimes, for example, an organization's ownership and mission shift, and your values and priorities may shift as well. Sometimes, public tastes and attitudes change, and it's time to align your brand accordingly. In the late 1990s, for example, Target was viewed as just another low-price retailer, indistinguishable from Walmart or Kmart. Through exclusive deals with high profile designers and personalities such as Isaac Mizrahi, Giada DeLaurentiis, Michael Graves and others, Target positioned itself as "affordable chic" and began to stand out from its competitors. Today, Target is second only to Walmart in retail sales.

In determining whether to rebrand, you might consider an internal analysis of your brand by looking at its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT). It is also a good idea to determine if your brand has "equity." Brand equity is the existing value of how and what you do, plus your reputation with you customers, staff and other stakeholders. You can measure your brand equity by looking at the following attributes:

Brand Reputation — Exactly how is your organization perceived and viewed?

Brand Awareness — Is your target audience aware of your organization? Do your competitors get more attention than you do?

Brand Momentum — Is your brand stale or is it growing? Have you outgrown your current brand? Does your brand have a negative issue associated with it?

A key to a successful brand is to understand the needs of your target audience and prospects. Remember, if you do not create your brand, your customers will create it for you.

JOB SUMMARY:

LeapFrog Solutions seeks an experienced, highly organized Proposal Development Manager with excellent leadership, management, interpersonal and problem solving skills. This is a multi-faceted position requiring hands-on new business support, initiative, adaptability and excellent follow through.

The Proposal Development Manager will be responsible for managing the all aspects of the company’s proposal-related activities for the full procurement lifecycle. Working with other staff, this position also contributes to the development and implementation of business development strategies, policies and procedures.

The primary responsibility of this position is to lead all company proposals and to ensure the highest standards in consistent, winning responsive bids. The responses are predominantly technical responses; knowledge of pricing structures is desirable.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration, or related field
Eight + years of proposal development and related management experience; at least three years in federal contracting proposal management
Excellent computer skills; proficient in Outlook, Word, Excel, and automated project management tool (e.g. MS Project)
Track record of success in developing proposals according to federal, state, and local solicitations
Track record of success in supporting marketing communications industry proposal and business development
Demonstrated leadership in assuming full responsibility for all company proposals, through all development stages
Experience using varied multiple award contract vehicles (e.g. GSA AIMS, GSA ITSS, SeaPort-e)
Demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace
An analytical mind and ability to analyze large amounts of information and data quickly
Strong planning and decision-making skills to engage diverse individuals under tight time constraints
Experience and ability to obtain additional resources (e.g. consultants) as needed
Willingness to do hands-on support for all company bids and related new business opportunity responses

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and/or interest in marketing, media and/or advertising industries and a passion and desire to grow the company and grow with the company
Knowledge of pricing structures (FFP, T&M, cost plus, and combinations)
Strong leadership skills to train, mentor, provide work guidance, coordinate, oversee and lead company staff
Good interpersonal skills working with staff and potential customers
Solid capacity to look at situations from several points of view; flexibility
Experience working in a small firm/agency setting
High comfort level working in a matrixed environment; strength under pressure

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assume overall leadership and predominantly hands-on support for company document responses to new business opportunities (e.g. responses to sources sought notices, solicitations, and all phases of related marketing responses and proposal development)
Direct hands-on proposal development from qualification stage through market research, and straw man proposal development, engaging appropriate staff, and fully developing and enforcing consistently high quality standards in production and final product:

Qualification of bid opportunity
Market research including using resource tools (i.e. FedMine, GSA E-Buy, FedBizOpps, E-VA, E-MD)
Engage appropriate staff for input and support
Outline proposal and develop compliance matrix; enforce compliant response
Facilitate kick-off with win theme development and other strategies
Develop production schedule
Write sections (i.e. boilerplate)
Organize and leading all review stages (pink, red, green, gold)
Final editing and production of document – hard and electronic copies

Take charge of all volume development including business/costing; contribute to costing
Develop other responses to opportunities (e.g. oral presentation slides)
Refine and update proposal development procedures, template, tools, and techniques
Maintain complete files and records of proposal related materials and final products
Grow the proposal development capabilities as the company grows

Assist CEO with using Tasks feature in Outlook, and have her 95% off hand-written, paper to-do lists by December 31, 2011.

Hop To It: Taking Shortcuts Is a Good Thing

Consider this: We each live an average of 75 years, or about 657,000 hours. After the age of 10, we spend an average of 8 hours a day (or night) sleeping. That comes to 189,000 hours — or more than 21 years — in the sack. We spend another 2 hours a day eating, which works out to 47,450 hours — or 5 years, 5 months — at the table. We dedicate another hour a day to showering, drying, shaving, brushing, combing, and dressing before stepping out the door for a total of 27,375 hours — or more than 3 years — primping, plucking and preening. To top it off, between the ages of 22 and 65, we work an average of 40 hours a week, which comes out to about 82,560 hours — if we exclude vacations, holidays and sick days — or roughly 9 years, 5 months behind a desk, at the computer and in meetings.

Add it all up, and it comes to roughly 41 years — or more than half our lives — sleeping, eating, getting ready for work and working, which doesn't leave much time to mow the lawn, walk the dog, take the kids to soccer or play video games.

No wonder we're so frazzled!

The good news is that by taking a few shortcuts here and there, we can cut the time of mandatory tasks and increase our time available for beneficial pursuits (see "playing video games"). Best of all, you can apply these shortcuts now, just by spending less time with our little buddy known as the mouse and getting more acquainted with the computer keyboard.

Small subcontractors find they may have to fight to get paid

Not until the prime contractor began questioning her company’s performance as its subcontractor did Lisa Martin, CEO of Oakton-based Leapfrog Solutions Inc. , become suspicious. The company had previously given her only glowing reviews, and the reversal came after Martin inquired about some overdue invoices.

“They changed their tune right after I asked about payments they owed for work we had already completed,” she said. “That was a big red flag.”

While federal acquisition regulations require agencies to pay their prime contractors within 30 days of receiving an invoice, there are no regulations that set a deadline for primes to pay ...

LFS was one of three finalists for the “Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year” award for “business leadership and extraordinary social responsibility efforts.” LFS provides pro bono marketing support and financial donations to the Fairfax County Life with Cancer House, Communities in Schools of Virginia, and the American Red Cross.

The article reads:

When she was a child, Lisa Martin smooth talked her young friends about the great features of her dad's car. That's when she was told she was going to end up in marketing and sales.

She resisted until she started her own marketing firm, LeapFrog Solutions, out of her Oakton home in 1996.

She knew the trade show business and was adept at bringing clients in and helping them - always lending an ear to provide the senice they needed for her previous employers. So, why not do it for herself?
She branched out on her own just as websites were becoming more and more popular. She decided that businesses needed help integrating traditional marketing methods with emerging technologies because new products will always come along.
She had clients tell her, "what the hell is this website? I understand print and video."

So, the unlikely information technology professional started to build client's websites while also taking care of their video, print and Internet advertising. Her clients include Exxon Mobil, the U.S. Secret Service, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The beautiful weather and fantastic conditions at the Reston National Golf Course made for a great day.

While neither of these ladies would call themselves a golfer, they both went out and tried their best and were awarded with a free group golf lesson - a prize given to the team with the worst score! Think its time to hit the driving range ladies!

Froggies Run 5k to benefit the Fauquier Free Clinic

This past Sunday, June 12th, our CEO Lisa Martin and Account Manager Megan Yamamoto completed the 2011 Pacemakers benefiting the Fauquier Free Clinic. The race took place at the Airlie Center in Warrenton, VA. It was a hot day and a hilly course, but our froggies finished strong along with 250 other runners raising over $7,000 for the clinic.

Froggies and Friends Raise $2,900 for American Red Cross Japan Relief Fund

The LeapFrog Solutions team celebrated its recent FEMA contract win with a party for employees and teammates at Morton’s of Chicago in Tysons Corner. Representatives from JWT in Atlanta, Ogilvy Washington, Blue Water Media, and Spurrier Media Group also attend the event and contributed to the cause. LFS used the event to raise money for the American Red Cross Japan Relief Fund by selling raffle tickets for a variety of donated prizes, including an iPad and a Washington Capitals jersey autographed Alexander Ovechkin. A total of $2,900 was raised and LFS CEO Lisa Martin presented a check to Linda Mathes, CEO of the American Red Cross National Capital Area. Morton’s proved to be a delightful venue where cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, especially the miniature crab cakes, were very popular.

A joint venture led by LeapFrog Solutions, a full-service marketing communications firm, announced today it has won a five-year contract not to exceed $75 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to market government-sponsored flood insurance under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

LeapFrog Solutions Team FloodSmart JV, LLC includes Blue Water Media of Greenbelt, Md. and Spurrier Media Group of Richmond, Va. as well as incumbents JWT of Atlanta, Ga., Ogilvy Washington of Washington, D.C. and Bender Consulting Services, Inc. of Scottsdale, Ariz.

“Each of these companies brings a dedicated team of people and rich experience to their respective disciplines,” said Lisa G. Martin, CEO of LeapFrog Solutions. “Together, we form a world class alliance dedicated to continuing the success of the FloodSmart program established over the past seven years. Congress created the NFIP in 1968 to give property owners a means to protect themselves from natural disasters that are not covered by standard homeowners insurance. The NFIP offers flood insurance to homeowners, renters, and business owners if their community participates in the NFIP. Participating communities agree to adopt and enforce ordinances that meet or exceed FEMA requirements to reduce the risk of flooding.

The FloodSmart program has changed the way Americans view flood insurance. As of November 2010, more than 21,000 communities across the United States and its territories participate in the NFIP, which holds more than 5.5 million policies for a total value of $3.3 billion premiums in force annually. The number of policyholders has increased by more than 26 percent since the start of the FloodSmart campaign; retention rates are up to 91 percent and there is a more balanced geographic distribution of protection. Policy growth in moderate- to low-risk areas is unprecedented and more citizens are turning to www.FloodSmart.gov for information about flood insurance.

Oakton, Va. — March 10, 2011 — LeapFrog Solutions, Inc. (LFS), a full-service strategic marketing communications and technology firm, recently completed a redesign of the General Services Administration (GSA) Office of Inspector General (OIG) website.

The new site at www.gsaig.gov launched on March 7 and features an updated look and feel that is easier to navigate and fully Section 508-compliant, which makes it accessible to people with disabilities. LFS, in partnership with Blue Water Media of Greenbelt, Md., integrated the new design with a content management system (CMS) that will enable the GSA OIG to easily edit or change content on the site.

The OIG is responsible for helping the GSA carry out its responsibilities and protecting the public interest by bringing about positive change in the performance, accountability, and integrity of GSA programs and operations.

“I am proud that the GSA OIG entrusted LeapFrog Solutions and our partner, Blue Water Media, to perform this very important work,” said LFS founder and CEO Lisa Martin. “We delivered a cleaner, more structured site that presents the agency’s information in a more user-friendly manner.”

LeapFrog Solutions Appoints William "Rusty" Griffith CFO; Alix Shutello, Mary Harrington, Abbi Boose Join Account Team

Oakton, Va. — March 7, 2011 — LeapFrog Solutions, Inc. (LFS), a full-service strategic marketing communications and technology firm, announced today that it has appointed William "Rusty" Griffith as Chief Financial Officer of the company.
LFS also announced that Alix Shutello has been appointed account director, Mary Harrington has returned to the company as special projects director, and that former intern Abbi Boose has been promoted to fulltime marketing assistant.

"I am pleased to welcome Rusty, Alix, Mary and Abbi to the LeapFrog Solutions team," said LFS founder and CEO Lisa Martin. Griffith, who has more than 25 years financial and operations experience, previously served as CFO for SecureForce, LLC, a computer security consulting company and Agent Logic, Inc., a software and services technology company. He also was a principal at Walker Ventures, and early stage venture capital firm and served in various senior finance and accounting roles at Lockheed Martin, Trusted Information/Network Associates and Nixdorf/Siemens. Griffith is a Certified Public Accountant who earned his M.B.A. degree in finance from Loyola University in Baltimore and his B.S. in accounting from the University of Maryland.

Shutello has more than 20 years experience directing project that involve marketing and strategic communications, messaging and brand development, publications, project management, client relations and social media best practices. She has provided expertise for leading government and commercial clients and has broad experience working with environmental organizations. Shutello joins LFS from Sage Communications where she was director for marketing and publications. She also has held senior positions at EEI Communications, the Wilderness Society and TMP Worldwide. Shutello earned her M.S. degree in environmental science from the State University of New York and her B.S. degree in biology from Syracuse University.

Harrington, who has more than 25 years experience in communications, marketing and brand management, returns to LFS where she served as company's creative director from 2002 to 2008. Most recently, she was director of marketing and creative strategies for Consumer Health Information Corp. As a communications consultant, Harrington worked with government agencies and commercial companies in a variety of industries. She also was an account executive at Stackig, Sanderson and White. Harrington, who is an award-winning designer, earned her B.F.A. degree from the University of Connecticut.

Boose, who interned at LFS in 2010, earned her B.A. degree in communications from George Mason University where she specialized in public relations and event management. She will be responsible for helping the account team manage client participation in trade shows as well as overseeing aspects of the company's federal contracting schedules.

LeapFrog Solutions Wins National Institutes of Health BPA

Attitudinal Marketing: Has yours been checked lately?

Last week my husband and I traveled over an hour to attend an event in Silver Spring, MD for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Heritage Week. The weather was not great for driving, but we decided to go and listen to a panel of veteran ocean explorers, archaeologists and scientists discuss their first hand experiences studying some of the world’s most famous shipwrecks, the Titanic and the USS Monitor — the famous Civil War ironclad that sank in 1862. NOAA had sent out a great email blast in full color using a picture that mimicked Indiana Jones, but the star was replaced with a retired NOAA employee who had some fun with the theme. It was great. The stage was designed as though the speakers were standing on an upper deck of a wooden schooner, using several large wooden chests (instead of barrels) and a large wooden plank that read “Shipwrecks” across the center of the stage placed below the video screen.

The overall theme was “Preserving America.” That was the reason why I was there. It’s a subject that resonates with me and is very important. As I sat and listened to these speakers I could feel and hear their intense passion as they spoke about the fate of these two ships. What was interesting is that these scientists did not bore us with long drawn out descriptions of the science and new technologies they used in mapping and surveying, but they focused on the human interest side of their projects, the part that gave them the passion to do what they do and to deliver a great presentation. Looking around the stage and auditorium I saw the audience and NOAA employees participating and genuinely enjoying all of the presentations.

Being a marketer, I’m reminded of the emotional similarities of what makes social networking such a powerful tool in marketing company brands — outreach and attitudes. Humans are moved emotionally by our basic values, beliefs and attitudes, which are considered the greatest set of targeting attributes you can define for your brand. This data gives powerful insight for your product benefits and overall messaging. Attitudinal marketing will give perspective and depth to your targeted messaging connecting your customer to your brand — just like passion grabbed my attention and kept it throughout the presentations. Yes, there are other important attributes like online browsing behaviors, purchase behaviors, interests and even ideologies, but these are secondary. I keep going back to the importance of human nature and what makes us unique — our emotions. So let’s forget about our analytical side for awhile and concentrate on our emotional side. Once we target that, the analytical side will be much easier to convince because facts tell and stories sell, so Make Your Message Matter^®.

How to keep the achoos away

Ahh Winter. The season of celebrating holidays, eating good food and tissues. Wait - Tissues?? By now if you haven't caught that annual winter cold, you most likely know someone who has (and are actively avoiding them...well their germs at least). But how do you avoid someone you work with? To be frank, working in an office environment can be like thrusting yourself into a cesspool of germs for 8 hours a day. BUT WAIT! While this may seem like your fate is sealed to spend a week or so in a cough medicine-haze, there are things that you and your office mates can do to help fight the good fight against cold and flu bugs. (in no particular order of course)

1. Wash your hands - and not just after going to the bathroom. I recommend doing this at least before eating and after meeting someone. Does this really need elaboration? (and then avoid touching your face)

2. Keep a handy supply of hand sanitizer nearby. I know that there are constant debates on the actual benefits of this product, however, I feel as though any little bit helps.

3. Clean your office space at least twice a week - especially if it is frequently visited. By this I mean to keep it nice and clean in the traditional sense, but to also wipe it down with household cleaning wipes. Areas to target are:

Keyboard
Monitor
Mouse
Phone
Doorknob
General desk area
Any handles (ie. filing cabinets)

4. Eat well. Your body can't protect you from impending disease if you don't give it the necessary tools for success. This includes the recommended dose of vitamins (esp Vitamin C!)

5. Keep your fluid levels up! Staying hydrated will both keep you healthy and keep your skin looking fresh! In this case, coffee and other caffinated beverages do not count as fluids. Water or a sports drink will work wonders. (And if you do end up getting sick, it will keep the 'gunk' so to speak moving right out of your system)

6. ZzzZzzZzz Who doesn't want to just curl up and go to sleep when the sun has set by 6pm? By allowing your body 7-9 hours of good, uninterrupted sleep each night, you are giving it time to rest from the day and prepare you for the day ahead. This can be achieved through setting up a nightly routine that you stick to.

7. Take off. If you feel yourself coming down with something, take the day off from work. Your body will thank you for the extra time to rest and heal and your office mates will thank you too. It is also important to point out that it is okay to ask for help as well. Over-exerting yourself when you aren't feeling your best is not the way to get better.

8. Some people recommend the flu shot - or any other preventative procedures. While I am not telling you to go out and get this done (because then I would be a hypocrite) many people swear to its benefits. If you do decide to get one, research the side effects and be fully educated on the risks and benefits before you go.

9. Know the difference between a cold and the flu or something more serious - and don't be afraid to go to the doctor. And when I say doctor, I mean a living, breathing person in one of those spiffy white lab coats. Google does NOT count as a doctor - even though we want it to.
9a. If the doctor gives you medicine for your ailment, finish your prescription!

10. Keep warm - I mean, its called a cold for a reason! Okay, so while the actual act of being cold won't get you sick, there has been some research to show that lower body temperatures can in turn lower your immune system, thus making you more prone to getting sick. So here's to big comfy sweaters, tightly-wrapped scarfs, warm gloves and a hat to top off any winter ensemble.

So there you have it. 10 tips on staying healthy. While I'm not a doctor, I do love watching medical shows. But what I love more is staying healthy. (gosh that was cheesy) My best advice would be to just be smart and use your best judgment this season in terms of staying healthy. Remember and put into practice those things we were taught in kindergarten and you are one step ahead of those who don't.
Now I'm off to set up a countdown to springtime and warm weather! Woo!!

Four Tips for Making a Lasting Impression

A first impression can often be the determining factor in the course of a relationship, personal or professional, so why chance it? As professionals, we should be doing everything in our power to make sure that every first impression we make is nothing short of the best representation of ourselves. This is especially important when meeting someone in your industry whether they are a potential client, your stiffest competition or even a new employee. By establishing a shining first impression, you are laying the foundation for a solid relationship. Therefore, it is just as important to take care in fostering that impression and turning it into a promising connection.

1. The Handshake

Ask five people what the ingredients for a “perfect” handshake are, and you will most likely receive five different answers. Growing up, my father taught me that when meeting someone, you always look them square in the eyes and give them a solid, firm handshake. Of course this varies with different cultures, but typically in America this is a good rule to follow. By doing so, you are showing whomever you are meeting that you not only care, but respect them and want them to feel confident in meeting with you. I have found that it is off-putting to offer a weak handshake. To me, that says that you do not care enough about me or my time to even put in the effort to give me a good handshake. Again, it is all about first impressions, and you don’t want to start out at a disadvantage.

2. Meeting Etiquette

Countless books have been written on meeting etiquette and most likely say the same thing. The key thing to keep in mind is respect. Here are three tips I find most helpful when attending meetings.

Be on time. “If you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late” is a good rule to follow. Arriving at a meeting late will most likely leave the other attendees with a bad impression. Remember to allow for traffic in planning your travel time. This will save you from keeping others waiting.

During the meeting, instead of formulating what you are going to say next, clear your mind and listen — don’t just hear — what others are saying. This will allow you to catch other details you may have missed when calculating your response.

Fight the urge to bring your cell phone. Knowing it’s there will only tempt you to check it, which will only further distract you. Instead, leave it in your office or in your car. If it is necessary to have it on you, placing it on silent or vibrate will keep distractions at a minimum while you wait for your important call.

3. Business Cards

Don’t forget business cards! In a time of almost paperless communication, business cards still remain an important commodity amongst professionals. It is safe practice to make sure to have a stack with you at all times. It is important that your business card properly reflect you or your company. Business cards are so customizable, with literally thousands of options from the type of paper to fonts to creative cutouts, yet more often than not you will receive a standard rectangular cut out on white paper stock. If it is appropriate for your market, why not try mixing it up a little? For example, LeapFrog Solutions’ business cards have rounded corners and utilize both sides to stand out. 4. The Follow Up

Sending a follow-up message is something we are all taught to do, but how many of us actually do it? Five minutes of your time really goes a long way in terms of creating a lasting impression. It is simple to do and may even help to keep you top of mind with whomever you meet. For tips on email etiquette, see Carita Eleazar’s article in the November 2010 issue ofHop To It. However, to stand out and take it one step further, a handwritten note is almost unheard of in these times of 4G cell phone speeds but will surely get you noticed. Some stationery and a book of stamps could be one of the best investments you make in terms of making an impression. Thanking them for their time and suggesting next steps to take will keep the door open for future meetings.

A good first impression is an invaluable piece to developing a relationship, be it professional or personal. However, it is also a matter of what you do with that impression that builds that relationship. By starting out strong and continuing to foster a good bond with others, you are setting yourself up for success. Your handshake and meeting etiquette coupled with memorable business cards and follow-up communication are all relatively small gestures that can help you make a strong lasting impression with whomever you meet.

LFS Comes Together to Support Life With Cancer

Over the past year, LeapFrog Solutions has been working with Life With Cancer, an organization through inova dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of those affected by cancer by providing education, information and support. During the holiday season, the LFS team began collecting donations from our employees which were then pooled and matched by the company. Yesterday, CEO Lisa Martin and Account Manager Megan Yamamoto presented Joanne Royaltey, Director of Leadership Giving at Life With Cancer, with a compiled donation of $1,110.00. This donation will go towards the Life With Cancer's Appearance Center, which will have a small full service beauty salon on one side and a ‘cancer boutique’ on the other that will have a vast array of supplies (hair care, skin care, make up, wigs, clothing, inspirational items, etc) that cancer patients need to address appearance issues and image recovery while they undergo cancer treatment.

Going Back to Basics on Email Etiquette

The beauty of doing business in today's digital world is that most day-to-day conversations with clients are conducted via email and are consequently documented word-for-word. This is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it is easy to go back to the history of a conversation and dig up important information by a quick "search" thereby saving you a humiliating phone call to the client asking to repeat what he or she said. On the other hand, anything you write can and will be held against you. In our industry, we hear a lot about branding but what we do not hear is the importance of email etiquette and how it reflects our own personal brand.

What does your email etiquette say about your personal brand? Here are a few things to consider before you send your next message like a hot potato:

1. Use your "To:" wisely. Have you ever seen your name on a distribution list and wondered if you need to take action or if someone else on that list is taking action? You decide to ignore it and then during the next production meeting you realize the ball got dropped because everyone decided to ignore the message. Avoid confusion or duplication of effort by directing your message specifically to those who need to take action. Think about what value your message will bring to the intended recipients. Does your client's boss' boss really need to know that you completed the status report? Does he even know who you are?

LFS Appoints New President

LeapFrog Solutions, Inc. (LFS), a full-service strategic marketing communications and technology firm, announced today that it has appointed Richard Bodson as President of the company.

Bodson brings 32 years of communications, information technology, management consulting, and training leadership to LFS. His experience includes 21 years with large companies, including General Dynamics IT, DynCorp I&ET and EDS, as well as 11 years with small businesses such as RSIS and FCBS. Most recently, Bodson was a consultant to multiple federal contractors including LFS. Prior to consulting, he was an executive vice president at NetStar-1 which acquired AVIEL Systems, Inc. where he was the Chief Operating Officer.

“We are looking forward to Dick enhancing the LeapFrog Solutions team,” said LFS founder and CEO Lisa Martin. “His experience organizing and growing companies of all sizes, as well as his work across nearly all government agencies and in the private sector will greatly benefit our existing and future customers.”

Over the course of his career, Bodson has been responsible for teams supporting the Office of the Secretary of Defense, all Department of Defense military branches, the Department of Homeland Security, and a variety of civilian agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration, General Services Administration, National Institutes of Health, intelligence community, Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Interior and State. Each year, the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce nominates companies and individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the community. This year, we were proud to be nominated for the prestigious Blue Diamond Award in recognition for our work with The American Red Cross, The Greater Washington Sports Alliance, Life With Cancer, and with The Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce. Over the course of the past year we have worked with each of these organizations individually to help them achieve their goals. The 80 page bid book which we created for the Greater Washington Sports Alliance helped win them the bid for the 2012 Fire and Police Games! Another great organization that we are associated with is Life With Cancer at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The Life With Cancer House is a refuge for cancer patients, survivors and their families. As part of our work, we donated funds that were used to purchase and stock a tropical fish tank up in the children’s area and we are working with the staff to identify other projects where we can contribute our talents. LFS celebrated the exciting news that our own Kim Danielson will soon be the mother of a beautiful baby girl. The entire team got together to celebrate with Kim, and her husband Dave!

Our impromptu shower was full of cute pink baby clothes, toys, and a other items that Kim and Dave will need for their little one.

Congratulations to the two of you. We cannot wait to meet your daughter!

Life with Cancer House

Yesterday LeapFrog Solutions conducted their annual all staff off-site meeting where the team reflects on the last year and focuses on the future endeavors as a company. This year's off-site meeting was particularly special as it was held at the Life With Cancer House. The Life With Cancer House is a refuge for cancer patients, survivors and their families. Their mission is to enhance the quality of life of those affected by cancer by providing education, information and support.

The Life With Cancer House can help people meet the
challenges of living with cancer by providing education, information on and support, free of charge, no matter
location or where the patient receives treatment.

This location and the people who work there are inspiring and full of spirit. This house is not a pace of sadness but a place of love, laughter and life! The LeapFrog Solutions team was so touched that Lisa Martin provided donation in the name of the company towards getting the children s fish tank up and running!

LeapFrog Solutions ranked as "Favorite Places on Google"

Google has identified over 100,000 businesses in the U.S. as "Favorite Places on Google" based on Google users' interaction with local business listings and LeapFrog Solutions made the list!

What does this mean you may be thinking - Well, each business is receiving a window decal with a unique QR code that you scan with your phone to read reviews, star the business as your own favorite and more. To the right is an image of the window decal with the QR barcode.

What do you do with the barcode?

This unique bar code on the lower right of the sticker (known as a QR code) lets customers - and potential customers - instantly learn more about a business, by visiting a mobile version of the business' Place Page on any supported phone. Here's more on how it works and what you can do with it:

Make sure your phone can scan a QR code with its camera, either with an application that you download or via software that's already installed on your phone. To find out what application to use for your phone, we recommend doing a Google search for the model of your phone along with "QR reader." Some of the applications that we've found to work best include beetagg, neoreader, QuickMark and Barcode Scanner.
When you see a QR code, use your phone's application to scan it. If you're scanning a QR code on one of the window decals that we've sent to thousands of U.S. businesses, you'll quickly be taken to that business' mobile Place Page on Google, where you can:

What is foursquare you ask?

Well, it is not the schoolyard ball game it used to be - foursquare is a location service-based social network-come-game. People use foursquare to "check-in", which is a way of announcing your whereabouts. The 2009 Spotlight Awards Annual Report Competition drew one of the largest number of submissions ever, representing a broad range of industries and organizational sizes.

More than 1,000 entries representing upwards of a dozen countries were received, so competition was exceptionally tough. LFS was selected as #85 in the Top 100 Winners! We won in several categories as well:

Lisa Martin - Awarded top 100 MBE Winner

Lisa Martin is listed as one of the top 100 Winners of the annual awards program that honors outstanding women and minority business owners in Maryland, Virgina, Delaware and the District of Columbia.

The University of Maryland University College (UMUC), Southwest Airlines, the Maryland The Parren J. Mitchell Foundation and the Governor's Office of Minority Affairs are this year's host organizations.

The awards program will take place on Sunday, November 15, 2009 from 3 pm-6 p.m. at UMUC's Marriott Inn and Conference Center in Adelphi, Maryland.

LeapFrog Solutions is excited to attend the annual SneakerBall and further support the Greater Washington Sports Alliance.

SneakerBall is the only black tie and sneakers gala that annually celebrates the best of sports in the Greater Washington D.C. region. The event is organized to benefit the Greater Washington Sports Alliance Foundation, which is made up of six local charities and creates avenues for corporate philanthropy to enhance the region's youth sports programs and facilities.

SneakerBall is one of Washington, D.C.'s signature galas held at the National Building Museum with over 1,000 attendees, more than 50 professional athletes & Olympians, the Greater Washington sports franchise ownership groups, leaders of the region's business community and the Sports Alliance charitable partners.
